CUSTOM MATTRESS GUIDE

How to Build a Custom Foam Mattress: Size, Firmness and Layers

A custom mattress lets you choose the exact dimensions, shape, thickness, support level, comfort layers and cover instead of settling for a standard construction.

Why Choose a Custom Foam Mattress?

A custom foam mattress is built for a specific sleeper and space. It can fit a standard bed frame or an unusual platform in an RV, boat, truck, bunk, antique bed or custom bedroom. The customer can select the dimensions and shape, then choose foam layers that provide the preferred balance of support and surface comfort.

Custom construction is especially useful when a standard mattress is too long, too wide, too thick or unable to follow angled or rounded corners.

Measure the Mattress Space Correctly

  1. Measure the platform or inside dimensions of the bed frame.
  2. Record length, width and available total thickness.
  3. Measure every angle, curve, corner and cutout.
  4. Check clearance around doors, drawers, cabinets and walls.
  5. For an irregular shape, create a full-size template and mark the head, foot, top and bottom.
Measure twice: Do not rely only on an old mattress because it may have compressed or changed shape over time.

Choose Your Mattress Firmness

Comfort levelFOAMMA support optionConstruction idea
Medium / balancedHR33, 2.5 lb densityUse as a responsive base with an optional gel comfort layer
Medium-firmHR33 or High Density 1.8 lb, 38 ILDAdd convoluted foam or 1-inch to 2-inch gel memory foam
FirmHR44, HR50 or High Density 1.8 lb, 46 ILDUse a firm base with optional gel memory foam for surface comfort
Extra firmHR70, 3.8 lb densityMaximum support and minimal sink, with an optional thin comfort layer

The final feel also depends on mattress thickness, body weight, sleeping position and the number and order of layers. Anyone choosing a mattress for a specific medical condition or persistent pain should consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Custom Mattress Layer Combinations

Medium-firm option: HR33 with gel memory foam

Use HR33 high-resilience foam as the supportive base and add a 1-inch or 2-inch gel memory foam top layer for a more conforming surface.

Medium-firm option: HR33, convoluted foam and gel

Combine an HR33 base with convoluted foam and a gel memory foam top layer. The convoluted layer changes the surface feel and may improve airflow between layers.

Firm option: High-density foam with gel

Use High Density 1.8 lb, 46 ILD foam as the supportive base with a 1-inch or 2-inch, 3 lb gel memory foam comfort layer.

Firm option: HR44 with convoluted foam and gel

Use HR44, 2.8 lb density foam as the base, add a 2-inch convoluted layer, and finish with a 1-inch or 2-inch gel memory foam top.

Very firm and extra-firm options

HR50 can provide a very firm base, while HR70, 3.8 lb density foam is intended for extra-firm, heavy-duty support with minimal sink.

Choose the Total Thickness

A thicker mattress gives more room for separate support and comfort layers. A lower-profile mattress may be necessary for a bunk, vehicle, lifting platform or space with limited headroom. Add the thickness of every layer and confirm that the finished mattress will fit the intended space.

Choose a Mattress Cover

The cover completes the mattress and helps protect the foam. Confirm the fabric, color, zipper location and whether the cover is removable before ordering. For RVs, boats or other specialized environments, ask whether the selected cover is suitable for the expected moisture and cleaning conditions.

Final Checklist Before Ordering

  • Exact length, width, thickness and shape
  • Preferred comfort level
  • Base foam type and ILD
  • Gel memory foam or convoluted comfort layers
  • Total finished thickness
  • Cover material, color and zipper placement
  • Correct orientation for curves, angles or cutouts

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a custom mattress be made in an unusual shape?

Yes. Custom mattresses can be made for angled corners, rounded corners, bunks and other nonstandard platforms when accurate measurements or a full-size template are supplied.

What is the difference between mattress density and ILD?

Density describes the amount of foam material in a cubic foot and is often connected to durability. ILD describes how much force is needed to compress the foam and helps indicate firmness.

Can I add gel memory foam to a firm mattress?

Yes. A 1-inch or 2-inch gel memory foam layer can add a more conforming surface over a firm HR or high-density support base.

Can FOAMMA make an RV or boat mattress?

A custom foam mattress can be sized and shaped for RVs, campers, trucks, bunks and boats. Measure the platform carefully and identify every curve or angle.
